Today began casually enough. Princess Isabella was entertaining her friend Ysidora when Mr. Nostradamus arrived. I was asked to fetch wine for everyone. I serve the wine and then BAM! Nostradamus just goes off with cryptic details about someone’s “midnight.” When I realize he’s talking about Princess Isabella I’m shocked. But even weirder was her reaction:
This painting is a celebration of spring and fertility! For me it is also Botticelli’s homage to collective joy and the power of group dance. As always, Botticelli’s celebration of the secular is just restrained enough to keep him from investigation by the church.
I have become obsessed with Nostradamus. My meeting with him was quite strange. He is perhaps the most direct person I have ever met. And yet I had the distinct sense that he wasn’t telling me something. The see’er who doesn’t see? The see’er who doesn’t tell?
While out riding today I met an unusual man, Michel Nostradamus. Here is the drawing for a “macchina da scrivere” he shared with me. He believes it will change everything.
My most profuse thank you for sending me this reproduction of the center panel of Hieronymus Bosch’s painting The Garden of Earthly Delights. As you have noted, it is an extraordinary work. I don’t believe I have ever seen anything quite like it. Are you certain that this painting dates to 1500? This seems like a late date to me.
